EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
Date Posted: 30th October 2025
Everything is going well with the fundraiser at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. There are red spots here and there and a steady stream of admiring visitors.
I love meeting old friends. Some are surprised that there are paintings of flora and fauna (and don’t forget the magnificent cockerel ) but there are also some wonderful charcoal drawings of familiar places - Cumbrian villages - as well as etchings based on local settings.
Make a note of Friday 1st and Friday 14th November when Sal and Tony Calvin are touring the exhibition telling the stories behind some of the paintings. Also Robert Adam, Master Printmaker who is transfixed by Kelly’s etching plates is driving down from Edinburgh to spend an afternoon Tuesday 4th and Tuesday 11th November discussing Kelly’s etchings. There is no admission fee because he is a staunch admirer of Kellys work and generously wants to talk about it and share his thoughts with us. He was the first person I rang when I found the rusty plates on the wash house floor after Kelly’s death in 1993. He marvels at the processes Kelly was using in the sixties - well before their time. He has requested a table and tells me he is bringing some visual aids so once again expect the unexpected.
